Toastmaster of the Day Paul Gillie

The Toastmaster of the day sets the meeting theme and tone while introducing the evening’s program. Our Toastmaster will present the Word of the Day and examples of that word in common usage, a quote and the educational focus for the evening.

Meeting Theme, Word of the Day, Definition, and Quotes:

Theme:  Change of season, change of mindset.

WOD:  Catharsis/Cathartic

Historical definition:  Conceived by Aristotle as the cleansing effect of emotional release that tragic drama has on its audience, catharsis stems from a Greek verb meaning “to purify, purge.” Today, it can be used to describe any emotional release, including a good long laugh or cry that is followed by a sense of balance and freshness afterwards.

Quotes:  Why is the public so interested in movies about the wealthy? My answer is that Shakespeare wrote about kings. That’s where the action is. And it’s the classic, cathartic thing. You get to indulge in a lifestyle you’re not part of, a tragic error leads to a downfall, and you get to say, ‘Thank God I’m not him.’ – Nicholas Jareck (American Filmaker)

I have never been depressed or thrown a plate, which I attribute to the cathartic effects of writing books about people whose lives are more grueling than mine.  – Emma Donoghue (Canadian Author & Screenwriter)

Sometimes punching a bag for half an hour was pretty cathartic and pretty necessary.  – Esme Creed-Miles (English Actress)

Quotes:  John D. Rockefeller: “The only question with wealth is, what do you do with it?”

Benjamin Franklin: “Money never made a man happy yet, nor will it. There is nothing in its nature to produce happiness. The more a man has, the more he wants

Henry Ward Beecher: “It is the heart that makes a man rich. He is rich according to what he is, not according to what he has.”
